Aachen Cathedral, Aachen – Top Attraction
1. Aachen Cathedral
Overview: Aachen Cathedral is a working Roman Catholic church and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the old town, beside Katschhof and the City Hall.
The main nave is generally free to visit, while the Gothic choir hall and Charlemagne’s throne require an official guided tour.
Timing & Execution: Arrive at 11:00 on a weekday, or 13:00 on Saturday or Sunday, and allow 30–45 minutes for the free nave visit; add 45–60 minutes for a guided tour.
Services, weddings, concerts, and special events can close or restrict access at short notice.
Transit & Validation Traps: From Aachen Hauptbahnhof, walk roughly 15–20 minutes through the city center to the cathedral, or take an AVV bus to Aachen Bushof and walk through the pedestrianized old town toward Katschhof.
Validate any paper AVV ticket in the onboard machine immediately after boarding and retain it until leaving. Use the signed public visitor entrance; do not use clergy or service doors.
Ticket Verdict: Free entry to the main cathedral; no ticket is required for the standard nave visit.
Buy official guided-tour tickets at the Dominformation on Johannes-Paul-II.-Straße or through the official Aachen Cathedral online system; online sales close 12 hours before the tour, with a limited on-the-day allocation.
Scams & Tourist Traps: Ignore street sellers offering “cathedral skip-the-line” tickets; the standard visit is free and official tours are sold only through the Dominformation or official online channel.
Do not pay unofficial guides for access to the throne or choir hall, which are available only on official guided tours.
